I have a dear friend with osteogenesis imperfecta and dwarfism which means Missy has brittle bone disease and is about three feet tall. When pregnant with twins, every doctor except one told her to abort. The twins graduated high school this year. While with a different doctor, discussion about a test procedure requiring anesthesia came up which is a serious issue with dwarfism. The doctor actually said no physician would do a surgical procedure on her because of the risk, so she shouldn’t bother with a test that could possibly detect a cancerous growth. Stunned, Missy asked, “Did you just say since I’m disabled, no doctor would help me, so don’t find out if I have a problem?” The so-called doctor said, “Yes.” I encouraged Missy to report her to the state medical board.
