Sadly, we’ve witnessed disturbing discrimination against vulnerable patients during the pandemic, and a situation in Texas turned tragic. Michael Hickson was a 46-year-old man who was starved and denied COVID treatment because of his disability. He had been a quadriplegic due to a previous health crisis, and contracted COVID from a staff member of the nursing home where he resided. A chilling recorded conversation was released between a doctor and Melissa, Michael’s wife. Despite her pleas, the doctor said this about the hospital’s decision to withhold food and COVID treatment. “This is the decision between the medical community and the state.” Melissa was powerless to save her husband. Michael leaves behind his wife and five children.
