A teenager in the Netherlands died by suicide as doctors looked on. Three years earlier she had been raped and then experienced depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and anorexia. But instead of getting treatment for these resultant conditions, she was allowed to refuse food and water, which ended her life. Once a society accepts the killing of patients to eliminate their suffering, whether it be physical or psychological, there’s no end to the expansion of what qualifies. This should send a chill up the spines of those living in states where physician-assisted euthanasia is legal. Once that Pandora’s Box is opened, there is no stopping its expansion. This latest example shows there are multiple ways to abandon despairing patients.
