Montoya Major had just begun graduate school, far away from family and friends, when she found out she was pregnant. “I cried like there was no tomorrow,” she said. Then things got, shall we say, complicated. Montoya found out she was expecting twins. The university encouraged her to quit school or expected her to keep up with the standard workload if she stayed. Universities are notorious for their lack of support for pregnant students. Montoya persevered and is graduating with twin degrees, a bachelor’s in cardiovascular sonography and a master’s in health science. I did the two-degree approach and it was hard! And my wife and I didn’t have twin infants. This new mother has certainly earned her Mother’s Day cards for years to come.
