As a past labor and delivery nurse and trained doula, Ella Cullen looked forward to having her own baby someday and breastfeeding. When Ella gave birth to Julia who has Down syndrome, nursing was very difficult. Some doctors tell mothers to not even try because they can struggle with a weak or uncoordinated suck and other complications. Ella was determined and achieved success. Since then she’s developed Julia’s Way, Reimagining Life with Down syndrome, and her first project was a video challenging parents and doctors to see the blessings of Down syndrome, which went viral. Her next project is a video to help women with breastfeeding and a book of resources. Julia believes parents should accept and celebrate the differences of these amazing children. I couldn’t agree more.
