Millie and Lewis were expecting identical twin girls, Skye and Callie. But Skye was diagnosed with anencephaly, a condition incompatible with life. The UK couple refused abortion to spend whatever time was available to them with Skye. The babies came nine weeks early and Skye lived for three hours. Callie had to stay in the NICU for weeks with three other sets of twins. One day, a frustrated mother of a set of twins told Millie she was “so lucky” she didn’t have twins. Millie was crushed but came up with a sweet way to let others know of a parents’ loss. She designed a purple butterfly to put on the bassinet. So if you see those in American NICUs you’ll know to treat them with extra love.
