Travesty in Neonatal Hospital Unit

webfeller   |   February 28, 2013

Here’s a disturbing story that seems like it came from the nineteen fifties. A black nurse is suing her employer, Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan. For over twenty years she’s worked for the hospital and is in the neonatal unit. A premature baby was born and the father told a supervisor he didn’t want any black nurses touching his baby. He then showed what appeared to be a swastika tattoo on his arm. The nurse said the hospital complied and posted a note in the baby’s file, “No African-American nurse to take care of baby.” The reporter investigating the matter contacted the local NAACP, but the president of the group said she was on the hospital board and couldn’t comment. It appears at no time during the baby’s month-long stay was a black nurse assigned to the infant.
