Pregnant in Auschwitz

Bradley Mattes   |   September 11, 2012

Not long ago, I had the unforgettable experience of visiting the Auschwitz death camp in Poland. No matter what you know about this dark time in our world’s history, you’ll never be the same after standing in a gas chamber. Miriam Rosenthal recently recalled being four months pregnant at Auschwitz. She was starving, cold and filthy. An SS officer with loudspeaker in hand demanded all pregnant women line up, saying their food potions would be doubled. Two-hundred women, even many who weren’t pregnant, stepped forward to get the food. But Miriam stayed where she was, something was holding her back. Instead of being given more food, the women were marched to a gas chamber and killed. Today in the US, over 3,000 women will go into abortion chambers and their babies will be killed.
