A mother was the only thing between her injured 12-year-old son and a hospital wanting to harvest his organs. Zach was caught in gun crossfire during a drug dispute. In the wake of Zach’s severe head injury, doctors at the Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas, pressured his family to donate his organs. They also put a do not resuscitate order in Zach’s medical record and removed food and water without the mother’s permission. All of this even though Zach was breathing on his own after being removed from the ventilator. Food and water were restored and the boy moved to another facility to perform tests Cook Children’s refused to do. Some critics have voiced suspicion the hospital was more interested in harvesting organs than saving Zach’s life.
