Until the mid-90s, there was slim evidence of the abortion industry in medical schools. Only 12% of residency programs taught students how to perform first trimester abortions, and only 7% taught second trimester procedures.
However, in 1996 the abortion industry went on the offensive by getting the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education to mandate abortion training in all OB/GYN residency programs, placing programs that did not comply at risk. The result was that 46% of programs now teach first trimester abortion, and 44% also teach second trimester procedures.
Further, Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion organizations established Medical Students for Choice, with a budget of over one million dollars. Clearly, Planned Parenthood is guarding their cash cow — “reproductive services” — which earned them $200 million in 1998.
Arriving on the scene to counter the abortion industry’s strategy is Physicians for Life, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting life from conception to natural death. They strive to have a pro-life presence of medical students on campuses throughout the nation. With the help of Focus on the Family, they recently established an active board of directors, of which two are former abortionists, and hired Cecelia Levatino as their executive director. Cecelia and her husband Tony, a former abortionist, are popular speakers at pro-life events.
The goals of this organization include establishing a nationwide network of Medical Students for Life groups on every medical campus. They will provide a free library of resources to students, training seminars and regional meetings and workshops.
Contact every medical student you know to make them aware that they can have a measurable impact on whether or not their future colleagues will perform abortions. Put them in touch with Physicians Life Alliance so that they can start a Medical Students for Life group on their campus. Imagine the number of babies that will be spared if even one physician is persuaded not to do abortions! Tens of thousands more children will live if Physicians Life Alliance is successful.
