My Pledge to My Patients

Dr. William Toffler practices medicine in Oregon where physician-assisted suicide is legal. But in his waiting room is a poster titled, “My Pledge To My Patients.” It states whenever he cares for a terminally-ill patient, he’ll “provide optimal comfort care until natural death.” He won’t prolong death against a patient’s wishes, and he’ll “never give a deadly drug to anyone even if asked”, nor will he suggest suicide. It also says he’ll carry out “these ethical principles with integrity, recognizing every human life is inherently valuable.” When I recently saw Bill at a conference, I told him I wish he were my doctor. If you know a physician who’d like to hang this poster in his or her waiting room, visit life issues dot org and click on today’s broadcast link.
