Keep Empathy Out of the Constitution

President Obama said he wants to replace Supreme Court Justice Souter with one who has empathy for certain segments of society. This should send a chill up the spine of anyone who loves the constitution. Lady Justice is depicted blindfolded and holding a scale. The idea is justice should be blind to favoritism or in this case empathy for any segment of society. Everyone should be treated with an impartial interpretation of the constitution. In the context of an Obama Supreme Court appointment, empathy means political agenda and favoritism for what’s politically correct at the time. The Court should be strictly interpreting the constitution, which is a legal contract for our nation and the American people. Empathy ebbs and flows with a changing culture and isn’t a role of the Supreme Court.
