Today let me talk about UNICEF - the United Nations Children's
Fund. It claims to represent the needs of children throughout
the world. And their annual Trick or Treat UNICEF campaign
is one of its Appeals. It has a compassionate image.
But is it really?
No! It has a false face that masks a cynical program
supporting all kinds of evil things. It is not the champion
of children and family values that it claims to be. Rather,
its public record reveals that it promotes abortion, abortifacient
drugs, and all methods of population control technology, without
any limitation at all.
It collaborates all of the time with an inter-agency partnership
that's composed of UNICEF, the World Bank, the United Nations
Development Program, the World Health Organization, the UN Fund
for Population Activities, International Planned Parenthood,
and the Population Council. Together, these groups produce
a major initiative, and that is the legalization of abortion
within all public and private maternal and health programs in
the developing countries. The World Bank basically provides
the money. The other groups do the dirty work.
UNICEF has international networks which are major conduits
for abortion propaganda, abortion drugs and devices, and for
mass sterilizations.
The UNFPA has been denied funding by the U.S. Congress
because of its involvement in the genocidal abortion and sterilization
program in China. The UNFPA and International Planned
Parenthood are well known for their vigorous promotion of abortion
internationally. And which group has given money to both?
UNICEF, the Children's Fund. It's involved in primary
health care centers for mothers and children, but it usually
links these to population control measures.
It has also strongly pushed the U.N. Convention on the
Rights of the Child. This international treaty has not
yet been endorsed by the U.S. Congress - we hope it never will.
President Clinton has favored this treaty, but it's been pigeon-holed
by Senator Helms. The reason? It denies parents'
rights and responsibilities. Under that treaty, children
would be given special rights apart from their parents and families,
like the right to have contraceptives, to have an abortion,
to view pornography - and the list goes on and on. And
all of this would be O.K. and legal over parental objections.
UNICEF is strongly pushing for the United States to ratify this
U.N. Convention - this Treaty on the Rights of the Child.
But all of us in the pro-life, pro-family movement view that
Convention as an absolute disaster, for we fear it will destroy
family life as we know it.
Finally, UNICEF says that it "does not advocate any
particular choice of family planning method." Well,
that's true. They promote all methods, all of the
time, and indiscriminately.
And so, behind the mask of UNICEF is a clear track record
of operations which fund abortion, abortion drugs, contraceptives,
sterilization, and mandatory state-control of family life.
Just maybe those of you who have been in the habit of contributing
money to UNICEF might give that a long second thought.
