Part Two – Baby Parts for Sale – The Documentation

By Bradley Mattes

In our last issue Dr. Willke brought you the shocking news that the abortion industry is involved in the harvesting of organs and tissue of aborted babies. As part of a two-year, ongoing investigation, Life Dynamics interviewed “Kelly,” one of a team of individuals who work closely with abortionists to provide a wide range of human fetal tissue to pharmaceutical, government and university laboratories. Further, evidence shows that they will sometimes instruct the abortionist as to which type of procedure should be performed on the woman to ensure that the desired tissue is delivered intact.

Kelly's interview detailed the ghastly and often illegal procedures used to obtain the desired lucrative baby body parts. Repulsed by the gruesome reality of her work, Kelly reported this activity to pro-life leaders and continues to work within the abortion industry, gathering information to

expose the dirty and deadly secrets of so-called “choice.” When we first broke this story in Connector, Dr. Willke was unable to reveal the documentation to prove Kelly's statements. The sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation dictated that we could not divulge this information without revealing Kelly's true identity. We can now share with you ironclad documentation that the abortion industry is indeed participating in a horrifying scheme to sell body parts of aborted unborn babies for profit.

Selling body parts or human tissue is against federal law, so how does the abortion industry circumvent this? Fetal tissue wholesalers pay abortion clinics a “site fee” to place employees, also known as “procurement agents,” into abortion clinics to collect various body parts of aborted babies. In return, the employee will have access to all desirable fetal tissue. These agencies then ship the tissue to researchers at pharmaceutical companies, university research laboratories and government agencies. Technically the wholesaler is not paying for the tissue itself, but renting space to harvest the body parts. The abortionist then “donates” the tissue to the wholesaler.

At the other end of the transaction the wholesaler will “donate” the fetal material to researchers but bill them for the cost of retrieval. Thus the business deal is complete.

Life Dynamic's investigation has uncovered two fetal tissue wholesalers. Anatomic Gift Foundation (AGF) began doing business in 1994. Its founders, Jim and Brenda Bardsley, operate from a doublewide trailer near White Oak, Georgia. The location also functions as a catfish farm. AGF's headquarters has been moved to Laurel, Maryland, and Jim Bardsley's brother, Brent, is listed as the executive director. They have additional offices in Colorado and Arizona. Evidence shows that the Phoenix location deals only with adult tissue, but the facility in Aurora, Colorado is located in an abortion clinic called the Mayfair Women's Clinic. The person in charge is a woman named Ying Bei Wang. Representatives of AGF say they also operate in abortion clinics located in the Midwest and on the East Coast. In 1998 the National Abortion Federation listed AGF as a member.

The second wholesaler, Opening Lines, is located in West Frankfort, Illinois. It was founded in 1997 by Miles Jones, a pathologist. His partner, Gayla Rose, oversees operations. They are actively working to secure relationships with abortion clinics in Canada and Mexico. The National Abortion Federation lists both Miles Jones and Gayla Rose as donors in their 1991 annual report.

Both wholesalers are located in small, rural areas in an attempt to avoid detection and pro-life protests. A spokesperson for Opening Lines, Dr. Miles Jones, bragged that even the businesses that rent in the same building are completely unaware of their clandestine operation.

Life Issues Institute has been provided with copies of 55 orders that have been placed for a vast array of body parts and tissue of aborted babies. This is merely a sampling of the numerous orders that exist. Copies of these orders are available upon request. Information that would identify the individual or facility ordering the fetal material has been omitted. Revelation of this information would reveal Kelly's true identity and stop further investigative work. Dr. Willke and I have viewed unredacted copies and can vouch for their detailed authenticity. We must caution you that this evidence is not for the squeamish reader. Orders for fetal materials are placed with a cold and callous disregard for human life. They demonstrate man's incredible inhumanity toward innocent unborn babies whose lives are viewed merely as a means of financial gain.

Highlighted throughout this article are excerpts of actual orders placed with these wholesalers. They matter-of-factly specify the tissue and quantity needed, detailed processing directions, shipping address, contacts with daytime and some nighttime phone numbers, and often a brief summary of what the tissue will be used for. They are careful to leave no loose ends. Even the Federal Express account numbers are provided for immediate shipment.

The documentation contradicts an often-repeated line of the abortion industry – that late-term abortions are seldom done and only when the baby has a health condition incompatible with life. The fact is that a vast majority of the orders for fetal material require that there are no abnormalities in the unborn baby. Neither do they want to deal with any sexually transmitted diseases. Almost exclusively, only normal, healthy tissue is accepted.

This new evidence also strengthens a case for what many pro-lifers have suspected all along – something that would be easy for the average person to overlook when reading through this documentation. One order requested 2-4 whole intact legs, including the entire hip joint of babies 22-24 weeks gestation. They outlined very specific dissecting instructions and required that the body parts be prepared for shipment within 10 minutes after the babies' deaths. That is an extremely narrow timeframe in which to perform various technical tasks. It increases the likelihood that the baby was not killed within the womb, but delivered alive, then killed and dissected. Another order specifically requested that the intact spinal column be processed “within 15 minutes after circulation has ceased.”

Some individual orders required such a high volume of tissue that many unborn babies had to die to meet the demand of each one. The abortion industry is clearly involved in a lucrative, Frankenstein-like enterprise, and there is a seemingly never-ending demand for their human product that

they are only too happy to supply. Evidence indicates that many pharmaceutical companies have jumped on the fetal tissue research bandwagon, frantically searching for cures that will meet the demands of aging baby boomers. These companies are well aware of the huge profits enjoyed by Viagra, which has even been eclipsed in profitability by a new arthritic pain-relieving drug. There is much money to be made for the drug company that can deliver the cure for Parkinson's or Alzheimer's to our senior citizens whose numbers are projected to vastly increase in the coming years.

Evidence clearly demonstrates that these wholesalers are in the business of selling human fetal issue. Opening Lines told Life Dynamic investigators that they offer volume discounts, free tissue to obtain new customers and occasional free tissue to good customers. Both AGF and Opening Lines provide a price list for their macabre services. AGF charges a flat fee per “specimen.” However, the price varies depending upon whether it is a first trimester abortion or one done later in pregnancy, with frozen body parts costing more than fresh tissue and organs. There is also a separate price for spontaneous abortions or miscarriages.

Opening Lines offers individual pricing per organ or body part. This is technically called their “fee for services schedule.” Prices vary for the same organ procured, depending upon the gestational age of the baby, with eight weeks being the dividing line. A sampling of their inventory includes: an intact trunk (with or without limbs) $500, gonads $550, eyes $75 (there is a 40% discount for a single eye), brains $999, limbs (at least 2) $150, spleens $75, livers $150, spinal cords $325, or you can get the entire intact unborn baby's body for $600. Prices are in effect through December 31, 1999. They also offer a 30% discount if the tissue is “significantly fragmented.”

Opening Lines is more aggressive in their marketing. They have produced color sales brochures targeting both abortion clinics and research laboratories. They even offer materials to abortion clinics that are designed to sell pregnant women on the idea of donating their aborted babies. This decision by women, the brochures says, will help “thousands of people with diseases and disorders that otherwise might not be cured without research.” The brochure tells abortion clinic operators how to “turn your patient's decision into something wonderful.”

The brochure targeting research labs is no less aggressive in its marketing strategy. They even claim that their “daily average case volume exceeds 1,500.” Bold headlines tout “FRESH FETAL TISSUE harvested and shipped to your specifications...where and when you need it!” They offer fees “lower than the industry average.”

There is an important element in this gruesome issue that should not be overlooked, and that is the total exploitation of the pregnant woman. First she is told that what she carries inside her is not a baby – it's a mass of tissue, a delayed period or a product of conception. If this were true, how does the abortion industry reconcile this rhetoric with a booming business in aborted babies' body parts? Women are further exploited when the possible physical complications are often sugarcoated or ignored all together, and Post-Abortion Syndrome isn't even acknowledged.

First, the abortion clinic staff misrepresents the reality of abortion. Then the unsuspecting pregnant woman is further lied to and exploited when they tell her that if she signs this permission slip she will be helping to protect and preserve

life. Later in life, when women are ultimately confronted with the reality of abortion, possibly by giving birth, their world often crumbles down around them. At this critical point in their lives the abortion industry has nothing to offer these women. It is then they come to the pro-life movement for help and solace. There they will find outstretched, loving arms to hold them and share their pain, while at the same time helping them begin the road to recovery. Is it possible that even the most ardent pro-abortion activist will, to some degree, question the rightness of their cause when learning about these grisly revelations?

Life Dynamics has prepared a complete set of documentation conveniently assembled in booklet form. It is available for $5.00, which includes shipping and handling. Honoring Those We Love By Giving Life to Others

There are many ways you can show your support for unborn babies and their mothers. We'd like to acquaint you with one very special and personal opportunity to help protect their lives.

We all have loved ones that have touched our lives. Grandparents, parents, brothers, sisters or close friends. What a meaningful tribute to honor the special people in your life with a gift to help unborn babies and their mothers.

This thoughtful gesture need not wait until your loved one has died. Some of our supporters have chosen to give financial gifts in honor of an event or celebration such as a birthday, baptism, wedding or anniversary. What better way to honor past, treasured teachers than by helping America's unborn babies in their name? Other special events can include the birth of a child or the loss of a loved one. We can't think of a greater tribute to someone for whom we care, than a gift that would help give life to another.

Every day our lives are touched by so many people we love and cherish. These people care for us, give direction, fill us with joy and in so many ways enrich our lives. By remembering them in this special way we can return some of the joy they have given to us. It is one of the ultimate expressions of love that we can give.

Rosemary Meyer

Director of Development

We will send a special acknowledgement to the person or their family, letting them know of your loving tribute.

Through your gifts, Life Issues Institute is privileged to continue our mission to turn the hearts of Americans to unborn children and their mothers through education – saving lives one heart at a time.

How To Tell if Judicial Candidates are Pro-Life

Most pro-lifers are acutely aware of the importance of electing pro-life judges. Unlike candidates for other offices, however, you cannot ask them questions about their position on abortion. Judicial ethics will almost always prevent such a candidate from answering your questions. This is a dilemma.

Do you have a candidate questionnaire and publish the results prior to elections? Good. That's your first amendment right and is one of the most important things you can do. But how do you rate judges? They won't answer your questions and most of them don't have clear track records. Still, if their positions are given, pro-life voters will routinely vote for the pro-life candidate. The question is – how do you find out? How do you nail them down?

Mrs. Barbara Willke, former president of Right to Life of Greater Cincinnati, hit upon a very workable solution. First of all, she selected a panel of five attorneys. These were all mature, highly professional, well-known attorneys, all of whose careers brought them consistently into courtrooms in front of judges. These attorneys were completely dedicated pro-lifers, knew these judges, and had a measured judgment of their ethical positions (whether they were pro-life or not, activist, etc.). Mrs. Willke contacted each attorney separately, asking whether he or she would be one of a panel of five, but that he or she would not know who the others were, nor would their names ever be disclosed.

Then prior to election, she mailed each one of them an identical questionnaire. The questionnaire asked them to grade each judicial candidate as to their pro-life, pro-family qualifications. 1) Highly recommended, 2) Recommended, 3) Not recommended. Each attorney checked off their recommendations and put the unsigned ballot card in the enclosed self-addressed, stamped envelope. All five responded, and, happily enough, their recommendations proved to be near unanimous on each of the candidates. She kept their replies in a separate private file.

On the Candidate's survey that was published in her newsletter, they were listed under JUDGES. Under the title was “this evaluation is according to pro-life, pro-family criteria and was received from our legal advisory committee.” She then listed each candidate with one of the three recommendations.

Cincinnati Right to Life is unique among city groups in that it distributes over 70,000 newsletters each month. Also, prior to election, a ballot card is distributed to many thousands of homes. This information was in the newsletter and also listed on the back of the ballot card. The result was that every pro-life, pro-family judge was elected, two pro-abortion judges were defeated to the shock and amazement of both parties and the local media. The two pro-abortion feminist judges were long-term incumbents. Many people, post-election, told Right to Life leaders that the wastebaskets in polling places, by the end of the day, were filled with Right to Life ballot cards and newsletters. Clearly, they had been used.

In retrospect, the key to success was obvious. The average voter most often knows who he or she is going to vote for for statewide office, for US Congress and other offices, but they usually don't know one judge from another. They also may not know candidates for the state or local school board. They mean to vote pro-life but don't know who to vote for, and if you give them this information, pro-life people nearly unanimously act on it. Incidentally, people were extremely grateful for the information, as her office phones rang off the hook in the days after the election with thanks for the information.

Some day we want to cleanse the federal courts of activist pro-abortion judges. Those judges come from lower courts, and they are originally elected at the local level. We recommend the above method to you.

Prenatal Tests – Abnormalities – a Dilemma

A jury in New Jersey recently handed down a decision that is very troubling. They directed Dr. James Delahunty, founder of the American Association of Pro-Life OB/GYN's, to pay $1.85 million in damages. A woman who said that Dr. Delahunty did not offer her an amniocentesis sued him after he detected an abnormality suggesting that her baby would have Downs Syndrome. He insisted that he did offer the mother amniocentesis. The jury, however, sided with the mother, stating that Dr. Delahunty was skewed by his anti-abortion stance, and was negligent “for failing to discuss the results of the test.” This is known as a wrongful birth suit. Twenty-seven states allow such lawsuits, which pose a significant dilemma for pro-life physicians.

To understand it more thoroughly, let's review a typical diagnostic effort. Let's assume, for one reason or another, the pregnant woman wants the test to be sure that her baby does not carry a fetal abnormality. In this case, the first thing done is a blood test for Alpha-Fetoprotein. This tests the mother's blood and can reveal, or at least suggest, that the baby she carries has an open spine or is anencephalic. This blood must be drawn between her 16th and 18th week of pregnancy. Of 1,000 women, 50 will have positive results. The blood test should then be repeated for it is frequently false. On the repeat, only 30 will still be positive. There will typically be one or more women in the 20 who have been cleared who don't believe the test or don't want to take the chance of aborting a normal baby.

On the 30 who are positive, an ultrasound test will be done. It will clear 15, leaving 15 still positive. Again, some of these women who are cleared will be so nervous that they may get abortions, again killing normal babies.

These 15 mothers then will undergo an amniocentesis test, which itself carries a risk. British studies have shown that 1% of the babies whose mothers are given this test will die. It takes 4 weeks to get the results from the amniocentesis tests, and these will typically narrow down and pinpoint 1 or 2 babies who have handicaps. These babies will be approximately 5 months along and weigh 1 to 1 _ pounds each.

Even after all of this testing, some of the babies aborted will be normal and some of the “normals” will be born with a handicap, as the test is not always 100% accurate. However, the test is available, is being used and it is required by law in some states. The main problem, even for those who favor abortion, is the level of anxiety created as the elimination process continues. As mentioned, many of those who are cleared still don't believe they're okay, and get abortions on suspicion that the tests were wrong. A report in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1986 found that from amniocentesis, false positive and false negative results varied from 4% to 17.5%.

The above applies to open spine, spina bifida and anencephalus. For Downs Syndrome there are several tests that point toward it but are not definitive. The final test for it and other genetic problems is amniocentesis.

So let us now discuss the pro-life dilemma. The most typical happening is that a pro-life couple is being seen by their obstetrician. Let's assume Downs Syndrome is suspected and the doctor immediately says that amniocentesis should be done. Let's assume these particular parents are aware of the fetal mortality rate from the test, and are also staunchly opposed to abortion. They tell the doctor they don't want the test done, for after all, all it does is confirm a diagnosis and satisfy their curiosity. Typically the doctor will insist. One reason, he says, is that it will help them get ready to accept such a baby, and he will minimize any worries about danger from the test. Unfortunately, some pro-life couples will then go ahead with the test. I have a daily radio program, and every time I discuss this problem I receive a number of letters recounting the needless loss of normal babies from the test.

Incidentally, fetal diagnosis also includes an earlier test, Chorionic Villi sampling, which diagnoses genetic problems but does it earlier in the pregnancy. Why do doctors insist on these? They do it to protect their wallets. As noted above, doctors have been sued because they did not do the test to discover a handicapped fetus so she could kill that baby. This has produced a compulsion among doctors to have the test done so as to protect themselves. They worry that, even though the couple now states that they would never have an abortion, they could change their minds if they do deliver a handicapped child and might still sue him later.

What do you do if you are that pro-life couple? The answer is to tell your doctor that you don't want to risk the life of your baby to satisfy your curiosity. Tell him to enter into his records that he has offered the test to you, explained it and that you've refused it. Then sign his record and have a witness also sign. This will relieve him of any possible liability and he'll quit asking you to have the test.

What should the pro-life doctor do? In the current legal climate in the 27 states permitting such lawsuits, the doctor must inform the patient that these tests are available. The doctor can certainly tell them about the 1% fetal mortality rate from amniocentesis. The doctor could also explain to them that there is no real preparation for receiving a child who's handicapped. Preliminary diagnoses aren't that accurate, and all this does is cause a continuing heartache for the parents for the balance of the pregnancy. There isn't anything to do ahead of time that can't be done when you discover such a child at birth, nothing that could be done better if you knew the child was handicapped before the delivery.

And so the doctor should tell the parents the tests are available and record that in the history, as noted above. But the doctor is certainly free to give his own opinion, free to note that while he doesn't do these tests, if the parents insist, he can refer them to someone who can.

An Attractive & Positive Way to Share Your View

Flags and banners displayed on the fronts of houses are a common sight in many of America's neighborhoods. They are a popular way for homeowners to exhibit enthusiasm for a sports team or alma mater, commemorate a holiday, or even express a view.

With this in mind, Rex and Georgie Willcox thought it would be effective to have millions of homes displaying flags depicting support for unborn babies. As a result, they designed and produced a pro-life flag, which measures 27” x 42” and is printed in seven colors. The unborn child is surrounded by ribbons of circles of red, yellow, brown, black and white – hues that depict the various colors of the human race. The baby is nestled in a red heart, which symbolizes the heart of those who display the banner. The American flag reminds those who see the banner that life should be protected from conception until death.

Since production has been completed, the Willcoxes learned that the leaning-heart style they chose is called “The Weeping Heart.” It appeared on the pouches of ammunition powder carried by Colonial soldiers because of the lethal effect of the contents.

Rex and Georgie used a significant portion of their retirement nest egg to produce the flags. A nonprofit entity, Sacred Heart Ministries, was conceived to handle sales and distribution.

Those that have already requested the flags include: Phyllis Schlafly of Eagle Forum, Senator John Ashcroft, R-MO, Rep. Henry Hyde, R-IL, and presidential candidate Gary Bauer.

You can order your flag for $12.95 ($4.25 for 25 or more) by contacting Sacred Heart Ministries, PO Box 5575, Longview, TX 75608. Phone (800) 884-8638. Website High quality T-shirts, with the same message front and back, are also available for $12.95 ($7.56 for 10 or more). All prices include shipping and handling. Sales on consignment are available for groups.

A New Breakthrough in Reaching Men

Right to Life of Michigan has been at the forefront of producing effective pro-life television advertisements to save unborn babies, help their mothers and affect public opinion. They have been running a comprehensive ad campaign since 1994, which has attributed to a drop in their abortion rates.

Right to Life of Michigan has earned the reputation for being one of the most effective statewide groups in the nation. In their ongoing efforts to be even more effective with TV ads, they commissioned a poll to determine who most influences a woman's decision when faced with an unexpected pregnancy. A telephone survey was commissioned of 300 men and 400 women between the ages of 20 and 30. The men and women were both “abortion conflicted,” meaning they had not decided firmly one way or another on the issue.

The results showed that the father of the unborn baby was the most influential person affecting a woman's decision whether or not to abort. In fact a vast majority of women look toward the fathers when considering their options.

Eighty percent of the women who responded to the survey feel that abortion is morally questionable. Of these women, 94% view the father's opinion as important if the relationship is strong. Sixty-eight percent see his opinion as key even if the relationship is ending, and 56% believe that, even in a bad relationship, the father's opinion has considerable value to her decision. As for the men, 67% agree that the quality of the relationship has an important impact on the abortion decision.

The biggest fear for men in choosing abortion? Regret. The regret of losing a child to abortion as well as the possibility that they may be negatively characterized by society. Specifically, many men regret their silence during the abortion decision. It is then they learn that their silence has been interpreted to be a lack of support and involvement while making a crucial, life-impacting decision. They regret that their silence has negatively impacted their partner.

Even with this fear of regret, the survey shows that 44% of men say they shouldn't offer their opinion, while 55 % say they should. Even with the surveyed men that lean pro-life, one-third of them would not offer their opinion to their partner. This reluctance to speak out is likely due to how society seems to view men's role in the abortion decision. The pro-abortion rhetoric has been very successful. The “my body, my choice” rally cry of feminists has placed men at the back of the bus. As a result, many men initially feel that they are giving their partner what she wants by remaining silent, regardless of their own feelings.

Right to Life of Michigan took their research findings to Jim Hanon, President of Compass Arts. Hanon has been responsible for many of their past TV ads. The result was three ads specifically targeted toward men. One ad, appropriately called “Silent Treatment,” shows various young men displaying silent, less-than-positive responses to women who told them they were pregnant. A voice then says, “If this was the only reaction you got when you told your boyfriend you were pregnant, what would that say to you?” While the speaker addresses women, the message is clear to men – women need your input at this crucial time.

Another ad, “Talk About Life,” shows a young man bringing his partner flowers, and later a card. Her reaction to these attempts of affection are less than encouraging. Behind this visual interaction we hear his voice say, “Back when we got pregnant I never said anything about it. That silence ended up speaking for me. Now, nothing I can say can seem to ever fill that silence.”

The final ad shows a man at the kitchen sink washing dishes. We hear a man's voice say that he never did the dishes. He wasn't there for her when she needed him. “Then she decided she just couldn't have our baby. And I feel because I wasn't around, my child isn't around either. I do the dishes now, but I can never seem to get them clean.”

All three ads effectively communicate to men and women that men need to be involved in the abortion decision, and if they are, the chance for a positive outcome increases.

Research of audiences that have seen these ads is encouraging with both sexes. Sixty-nine percent of the men and 71% of the women responded favorably. In addition, 60% of women and 57% of men were able to recall these messages. Blind recall of the ads was twice that of those run by the National Abortion Rights Action League.

This breakthrough in how to effectively communicate with men will be of great interest to all areas of the pro-life movement. By incorporating these research findings, crisis pregnancy centers can learn how to reach out to help men who accompany their girlfriends. Having some knowledge of what makes men tick may give sidewalk counselors an added tool toward protecting unborn life. In addition, pro-life educators will be able to communicate to their audiences that men play an important role during an unexpected pregnancy.
