The American Board of Anesthesiology doesn’t want any of its physicians involved with capital punishment via lethal injection, and they’ll expel any participates. Jeffrey Andrews, secretary of the ABA, wrote, “Patients should never confuse the death chamber with the operating room. Physicians should not be expected to act in ways that violate the ethics of medical practice, even if these acts are legal.” But why does the ABA remain stone-silent on assisted suicide and euthanasia? The same principles apply here. And how about making sure their doctors don’t kill innocent unborn babies through abortion? The death chambers of abortion and assisted suicide are often confused with operating rooms, but it’s just killing. The ABA should say so and expel members who violate these principles.
