Last June, Canada legalized euthanasia and already scores of physicians are withdrawing their names from those who agreed to carry out the intentional killing of patients. Many have done at least one procedure and reported the process was “overwhelming” or “too difficult” and said “Take my name off the list. I can’t do any more.” Dr. Jeff Blackmer of the Canadian Medical Association doesn’t know how many doctors are saying no, but, he said, “It’s enough that it’s been noted at a systemic level.” My non-medical response is “Well, duh!” You’re asking doctors, dedicated to preserving life, to intentionally kill their patients for an almost unlimited list of reasons. Death is an ugly experience, and contrary to some reports, it’s been an appalling process for several euthanasia victims.
