Jahi McMath is a teenager who had a routine medical procedure in an Oakland, California, hospital. Something went tragically wrong and she suffered a serious brain injury. The hospital — some say to cover their tracks — quickly declared Jahi brain dead. But her mother stood in the gap and got her to a safe facility in New Jersey. It’s been almost three years and this so-called “corpse” is showing signs of breathing on her own. A video shows her mom, Nailah, coaxing Jahi to breathe. When she does so, a green light on the ventilator lights and keeps track of her breaths. More than 12 means Jahi is breathing on her own. During the video, she got up to sixteen! Someday, she’ll have something to say to those doctors who declared her brain dead.
