Oregon was the first state to legalize assisted suicide. A physician can legally prescribe a lethal poison if the person has less than six months to live. Not to worry they said. We have good safeguards to protect the people of the state. If that’s true, then why did the latest report show patients were killing themselves with two-year-old prescriptions if they supposedly had only six months to live? But those running the program aren’t going to let irregularities like these slow them down. Instead of following the guidelines, they’re proposing a change to match closer to what they’re doing. We can learn from the Netherlands earlier experiences. Now they’re euthanizing children and a full one-third of doctors say they would euthanize mentally ill patients. History is repeating.
