When Steven and Nicole found out their baby would have Down syndrome, they were shocked and frightened. Like most parents, they didn’t know much about the condition or what the future held for their baby. What happened to them happens to far too many parents. They said the doctor put “horrendous pressure” on them to abort. He warned the child would be lucky to perform one or two functions, would need round-the clock care and their marriage would end in divorce due to stress. He said, “Make no mistake, your kid will be retarded.” I’d like to give that doctor a piece of my mind he’d never forget. The parents chose life and Steve told me, “It’s not struggle free, but our lives have been enriched beyond words.” Sadly, too many stories don’t have this happy ending.
