Because miracles do happen

There’s a glaring hypocrisy when it comes to those who support the philosophy of “pro-choice.” Although they won’t often admit it, the only choice they’re advocating is abortion. It’s particularly tragic in cases where the unborn child has been given a grave diagnosis. Parents who are dealing with unimaginable heartache are essentially told that the merciful thing to do is to end their child’s life.

It’s a devastating lie.

Choosing to kill an unborn baby is never an act of mercy. Parents who decide to carry their child through such circumstances can face persecution, or be called cruel and selfish. Their “choice” in favor of life is often not respected by those who see abortion as the only option.

The most public example of this is the recent case of Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler. Pregnant with their first child, she and her husband received tragic news at a routine ultrasound appointment. Their unborn daughter was diagnosed with Potter’s Syndrome, a condition that results in low amniotic fluid, underdeveloped lungs and poor kidney function. They were told by multiple doctors that her condition was incompatible with life. When Congresswoman Beutler publicly shared the news and simply asked for prayer, she faced a host of rude and insulting comments from so-called “pro-choice” individuals (I call them thugs). To them, this wasn’t a precious life, it was a problem to be solved and the solution was abortion.

Mrs. Beutler bravely carried her child, and sought out a group of doctors who were willing to try save the baby. Every week they injected saline into the womb to give the baby’s lungs a chance to develop. She went into pre-term labor and Abigail was born at only 28 weeks. At just 2 pounds, 12 ounces, she was a little miracle. Now, she’s active, stable and breathing on her own. Her parents courageously made a choice for life. Thank you to everyone who held this family up in prayer. Please keep praying.

Here’s another case where a fatal diagnosis was met head-on with prayer. Christopher and Melissa deDiego were pregnant with their daughter, Lacey, when an ultrasound revealed several abnormalities. She had a malformation that allows abdominal organs to push up and impair proper lung formation. They also discovered that she had two holes in her heart. The doctors told the couple there was no hope and their daughter would likely die in utero or within hours of birth. They recommended abortion. However, on that same day, Lacey’s dad, Christopher, felt God was telling them to trust Him. From that point, they stood together, prayed and believed.

Four months later, little Lacey Rose made her way into the world at 6 pounds, 7 ounces. Tests showed that she had a congenital diaphragmatic hernia, two large holes in her heart and suffered from arthrogryposis, abnormally developed muscles. She needed surgery, but when they went in to fix her hernia, doctors found it had closed on its own. Two weeks later, an exam revealed that the holes in her heart had closed and surgery was not needed.

This little baby who was essentially given a death sentence was proving the medical professionals wrong! After 75 days in the hospital, Lacey was able to come home. Now, 6 months old, she participates in physical and occupational therapy and is developing beautifully. I encourage you to watch a video the family put together documenting Lacey’s story of survival. Her big beautiful eyes will touch your heart as they did mine. Also, visit their Facebook page, Love for Lacey Rose, to send them a message of encouragement.

Sadly, many in the medical community are abortion-minded, leaving families in a position of fighting for their baby’s life. For some, like the Dennis family whose daughter Lilliana has Trisomy 18, the fight didn’t end at rejecting abortion and bringing her into the world. Even after her birth, the medical establishment continued to deny her a chance at life. Her parents were forced to go before a hospital ethics board in order to plead their case to obtain the life-saving surgery little Lilliana needed. (You can watch their incredible story in our TV episode entitled, Hope for Lilliana.)

Not all stories have happy endings. Many families endure the tragedy of losing a child. But they cherish the wonderful memories of their brief time with their baby. It’s my prayer more parents’ hearts and minds will be opened to embracing life, even when facing a difficult diagnosis. Remember, God’s the author and creator of life. Trust in Him to carry you through whatever challenge you may encounter.
