Saving Lives in America’s Abortion Capitol

Nowhere in the US is the abortion battle fiercer than in New York City. According to the latest department of health statistics, a startling 40-percent of all New York pregnancies end in abortion, one of the highest rates in the nation. What’s worse is that Governor Andrew Cuomo is contemplating an outrageous abortion expansion bill. It will allow more late-term abortions, permit non-doctors to perform abortions and will eliminate restrictions such as parental consent. With such a widespread permissive attitude toward abortion, it can leave young women facing unexpected pregnancies to feel as if there’s no other choice for them but abortion.

Yet, a group of nuns is united in its mission to give these mothers another choice—life. Since 1991, Sisters of Life has been lovingly reaching out to pregnant women offering hope, encouragement and practical resources. Often when young women face an unplanned pregnancy, their first reaction is fear. Sadly, that fear can be what drives them to think that abortion is the “quick fix.” Sisters of Life helps women address their fears by surrounding them with a network of support. Most abortions happen shortly after the woman discovers she’s pregnant, which is why the sisters say the first thing they do is to encourage the woman to take time to assess the situation and not make any rash decisions. There’s a great focus on the psychology of the woman by helping her to move out of a victim mentality. A Huffington Post article described the mission of the sisters as “one of female empowerment.” Just think, while pro-aborts are advocating escape and denial of responsibility, this pro-life response is revealing women’s inner strength, encouraging them that they can do this and they’re not alone. Regardless of our religious faith, we can all agree this is a winning combination.

The sisters do more than offer emotional and spiritual support; they offer practical assistance. For example, in one case they helped a young single mother with two small children who was pregnant with twins. They found her a doctor, obtained legal assistance so she could keep her apartment, arranged transportation to her doctor’s appointments and helped her connect with programs where she could find financial aid. The mother was so impacted she named her twin girls after two of the sisters.

Donations and volunteers keep their mission center stocked with maternity clothing, diapers, baby clothes and other necessary baby items. Everything is given away to expectant mothers in need. In addition, they serve those most vulnerable to the pressure of abortion through the Holy Respite ministry. This allows pregnant women to live side-by-side with the sisters throughout the pregnancy and up to six months after birth. It is a structured, supportive and Christ-centered environment that can provide the stability these mothers need to plan and prepare for life with their child. In addition, Sisters of Life provides a program of hope and healing for those who are post-abortive. Called “Entering Canaan,” it addresses some of the most serious psychological and spiritual consequences of abortion through monthly days of prayer and healing, special gatherings and retreats. It’s estimated that over 90-percent of the women the sisters come in contact with decide to keep their babies, with about 2-percent choosing adoption. These are the statistics that those like Governor Cuomo and his pro-abort cohorts don’t want you to know. It dispels the lie that female empowerment can be achieved through abortion. Women don’t have to choose abortion. Women have options and there’s a network of people willing to stand by them and support their choice of life. I think Sister Magdalene summarized it quite well, “We believe that love is always stronger than death.”
