Encouragement out of Tragedy

Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar have made headlines as the parents who’ve raised an incredible family of 19 children. You might have watched the television show documenting the large family’s life.

Recently, their expected 20th child—whom they named Jubilee Shalom—sadly died by a miscarriage that Michelle experienced earlier this month. It’s tragic news for a family that admirably exemplifies what it means to treasure human life.

Lately, the little one’s memorial has sparked a productive discussion. I believe it’s one that demonstrates the pro-life movement’s latest winning strides in countering the war against America’s unborn children.

Consider the conversation that was generated shortly after images were made public that the Duggars chose to share at the memorial service. Little Jubilee’s hands and feet were beautifully depicted in touching photographs displayed on large screens.

The secular blogosphere, in particular, was especially interested in these powerful visuals. Even certain pro-abortion blogs chose to talk about the matter—a shocking development in and of itself.

One pattern was duly noted in responses to the overall story.

Nobody denied that Jubilee was a human being. Even as people debated about whether the parents disrespected their deceased child’s dignity, no one outwardly suppressed the key truth that this tiny life had dignity in the very first place.

This latest instance suggests that the pro-abortion lie that a baby is just a mass of tissue or cells is on the verge of becoming extinct. There’s certainly reason to be optimistic that the tide is turning in favor of the babies.

Rapidly advancing technology, like 4D ultrasound, is also playing a part in emphasizing the humanity of the unborn child. With these factors, pro-lifers have the evidence and resources available to change more hearts and minds about abortion in the coming year.

The current climate that’s focused on the unborn baby’s humanity is a perfect one in which to drive home the key principle of Life Issues Institute. Calm, rational pro-life education is the foundation on which legislative and political victories are built both now and in the coming year. The conversation about Life isn’t going away anytime soon. Let’s be faithful and wise in our endeavors to not be silent on behalf of the unborn.

Happy New Year, and here’s to a life-affirming 2012 for the babies and their parents.

Sincerely,
Bradley Mattes
