Urgent Action Needed

In President Bush’s Second Term he will in all likelihood have the opportunity to nominate two or more Supreme Court Justices. When a Justice is nominated by the President, that nomination goes before the Senate Judiciary Committee, which conducts hearings and votes on the nomination. The chairman of the Judiciary Committee is instrumental in directing the President’s nominees to successful confirmation. Pro-abortion groups are vowing to do everything they can to block the President’s nominees in the Senate.

Unfortunately, Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) is in line to be the Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman. Senator Specter is strongly pro-abortion and is one of the leading champions of human cloning. In 1987, Specter played a key role in blocking President Reagan’s nominee to the Supreme Court, Judge Robert Bork, who was on record in opposition to Roe vs. Wade.

On November 3, 2004, Specter told reporters that he believes Judicial nominees who do not express support for Roe vs. Wade cannot be confirmed.

Senator Specter believes he has a lock on this chairman position. In all actuality, if another Republican member of the committee decides to challenge Specter and gains the support of a majority of Republican members of the committee, then the decision would go before the entire Republican conference. In that case, the 55 Republican Senators would decide who will become the Chairman by secret ballot.

This is where you and I come in. We must call our Republican senators and urge them to support pro-life senators, not Senator Specter, for Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman. If you do not have a Republican senator, call the Republicans on the Judiciary Committee. They are:

Orrin Hatch (UT) 202-224-5251
Charles Grassley (IA) 202-224.3744
Jon Kyl (AZ) 202-224-4521
Mike DeWine (OH) 202-224-2315
Jeff Sessions (AL) 202-224-4124
Lindsey Graham (SC) 202-224-5972
Larry Craig (ID) 202-224-2752
Saxby Chambliss (GA) 202-224-3521
John Cornyn (TX) 202-224-2934

Also, you can call the office of Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) at 202-224-3344.
